Congratulations, Sam Wednesday 25 January On Wednesday afternoon, the young Sam Cohen entered the only race year 7 boys can run in, raced against boys up to two years older than himself, from schools all around london in the 33 boroughs.
This race was fiercely contested with perhaps 4 or 5 possible winners.
With over 50 competitors in this 2.7km XC race, Sam quickly broke from the tape to lead in the opening 150 metre uphill section of the race, continuing to lengthen his stride to try and break the hearts of the opposition. This proved not to be easy as a pack of 3 boys pursued him, hoping the leader would fade.
With the last 400m downhill finish of the race to come, Sam was still ahead by 5 metres, with around 3 metres to 3rd and 4th.
In a sprint finish, with the roar of the crowd cheering Sam on, he dug deep to find a little more when coming under pressure to win the race start to finish by 5 metres from a strong field, to claim the gold medal.
