Setting & Streaming
These are two quite different techniques. Setting means the division of a mixed ability form or year group into ability groups, or sets, for different subjects. Setting is used in conjunction with whole form teaching and gets the best out of everyone. We set three ways in English and maths in Shell and Form 2; and we set three ways in maths, science, French and Latin in Forms 3, Remove and 5.
Streaming is a different technique, involving the division of a year group into two or more streams based on overall ability. This method is not in use at Northcote Lodge.
