Before the 1988 Education Reform Act what was taught in schools was pretty much up to the teachers who worked there. The 1988 Act created a framework, which has since evolved into the National Curriculum, stating what subjects should be taught in schools and to what standard. Key Stages 1, 2 and 3 at age 7, 11 and 14 prescribe the standards expected to be reached. This framework fulfils the need for a simple, easily understood and universal system.
The National Curriculum is compulsory for state schools, but not for independent schools. Nevertheless, the ISEB (Independent Schools Examinations Board) which sets the Common Entrance exams our boys sit, has revised its syllabus in most subjects to reflect the requirements of the National Curriculum, so we follow it very closely in most areas.
