Music plays an important part of life at Northcote Lodge. Our Director of Music co-ordinates all musical activities and supervises a staff of visiting teachers who give tuition in individual instruments.
Most boys have two class music lessons a week. Boys are encouraged to take up the piano or an orchestral instrument to give them access to a richer musical experience through solo and ensemble performance. This involves one half-hour lesson a week and a commitment to regular practice. Instrumental ensembles are open to boys after only a few lessons, greatly enhancing their enjoyment of learning.
Boys from Form 2 upwards may audition for the strong Chapel Choir which, inter alia, takes a leading role in our weekly church service. The Choir takes part in local music festivals, and sings a full choral evensong jointly with Broomwood Hall once a term.
Regular performance opportunities are provided in the classroom, before and during Assemblies and more formally at concerts. There are well-attended annual informal concerts for both Junior and Senior Schools as well as an end of year Summer Concert. At the end of each term there is also an informal concert staged by and for the boys themselves.
Professional recitals are given in school once a term to expose boys to a professional standard of music making, to which some of them might aspire themselves.
