Internal exams are held twice a year in November and June. For Shell and Form 2 these consist of papers taken in form rooms over three days in most subjects including the core subjects of English, Maths and Science. By Form 3 boys are well into their Common Entrance work and sit formal one-hour papers in exam conditions over three days in the core subjects as well as in History, Geography, French, Latin and Religious Studies (RS).
During their last two years (Remove and Form 5) the exam papers are actual Common Entrance or scholarship papers. Exams are marked shortly afterwards and a results sheet is sent home to all parents before the end of term.
Examination technique and study skills are taught. Revision is guided in lessons, but parental help with revision at exam time is extremely valuable and can make all the difference – boys will only do well if they have worked hard in form and revised carefully. Boys with disappointing results may be asked to re-sit their papers during the following week.
The boys quickly get used to the pressure of exams, and we go to great lengths to ensure they are not unduly stressed. It is very helpful if parents maintain a relaxed attitude too.
